Children and families in Yuba and Sutter Communities are hit by a lot of problems. Things such as bullying, cyber bullying, tobacco use, homelessness, and teen pregnancy can be seen throughout area. One should never feel alone when there are so many services willing to improve any situation that arises.
Yuba College’s ECE 31 class put on a community resource fair on November 3, 2015 regarding these issues.
Though the community resource fair was only one hour long, from 1:45-2:45, there was a variety of information about the services in the community to learn.
Many community organizarions made an appearance to discuss what their role in the community involvement was.
One of the organzations that made an appearance was A Woman’s Friend who offers a multitude of services for women such as pregnancy testing and pregnancy services up to the first ultrasound.
They also provide support for pregnant women or women with a baby with food, diapers, and clothing when needed.
Another resource was StarFire Gypsys, who was featured in the 2015 fall edition for their horse showing, only they were there to discuss the work they do with equine assisted therapy, horse related work with wounded veterans, and horse related work with children coming out of foster care as well.
Yuba County Victim Witness was also there to discuss what they do for the work they do with children affected by domestic violence. Terry Ayres, the agent representing victum witness, brings in her dog as a therapy tool for children who have to appear in court to testify.
As they walk into the courtroom to testify, they are handed the dog’s leash so that they have control over something (the dog) even if they do not have control over anything else in their lives. This helps children gain the courage to testify.
Yuba County Tobacco Education and Cessation was there also talking about how smoking affects children and families through the smoker themselves, second hand smoke, and even third hand smoke.
He provided lots of valuable information on the effects of smoking and how to quit. He was also knowledgable and had expieriences to share to encourage youth to quit.
Many other people with community involvement also came to the Community Resource Fair this semester.
In total otal there were 11 resources present and it does not end there. We live in a community full of resources, you just have to get out and find assistance in the area that you may need.
