The Mass Communications department is utilizing the Prospector as a way to get more involvement from students and to give some journalism experience as well. The following is an article from MCOMM 8 student, Jonah Wilson.
As of February 5th, the Yuba County Library has opened their Digital Reel database to the public. The once exclusive archive is now serviceable thanks to the Appeal-Democrat and the Rotary Club of Marysville, whose members each worked to catalog “over 20 newspapers and assorted historical documents from 1849 to 2018” according to a Yuba County Library release.
The Digital Reel system features digitized scans of newsprint microfiche and archived prints from over 20 historical newspaper companies as they once appeared in the hands of readers generations ago. In other sections of the database, other historical documents are catalogued. Among these are primary source letters, regional histories, minute books, obituaries, and court transcripts spanning the past 169 years. The Digital Reel is an asset to researchers, enthusiasts, and historians in the Yuba-Sutter area alike; it provides a now-vernacular opportunity to see how both past regional and national cultures have shaped this modern day.
The database can be accessed through the Yuba County website page for the Yuba County Library under the Historical Resources section at https://www.yuba.org/departments/library/historical_resources.php
