Yuba is history

September 12, 2011 Carol Donaldson Leave a Comment

Located at the Yuba County Library is the California Room. The California Room contains a vast array of information on the local history of the Yuba-Sutter area.

Gina Zurakowski, the archives librarian, said that the California Room is open to everyone and that it is an excellent source of information on local history. There are even newspapers dating back to 1849 that are on microfilm. Also available for study are digital pictures of early Marysville: plot maps, maps, assessor books, along with other history books. Unfortunately books cannot be checked out of the California room; however Gina said copies can be made of most of these items and that the cost is usually fifty cents.

The rules for those who wish to use the resources of the California room are to check in at the front desk; no purses or bags, no food or drinks are allowed. Anything over one hundred years old must be handled with gloves.

Along with the archives, the library offers “Table Talks” where local historians present local history and hold informal discussions. The next table talk is schedule for October 22nd Richard Neault will be presenting the “Life Of Stephen J. Field”. A beginning Genealogy Workshop will be held on October 8th in the Library, sign ups are required for the workshop.

If you have a report to write and plan on doing it on local history, check with Gina in the California room she point you in the right direction.
