Spring showers sure have taken their toll on the YC softball team this season. With six canceled games and who knows how many more to come, things may not be looking to bright. Games against Contra Costa, Solano, Laney and Napa were all canceled due to rain. It is not known if these games were rescheduled.
The weather held steady enough for one game and these girls sure showed their stuff. On March 30, Yuba beat Mendocino 7-2 and 4-0 respectively. The day was cold, with a little drizzle, but the weather was not enough to dampen the fast burning plays the girls of Yuba College whipped out. The game started out on the slow side, but started to get exciting around the fourth inning.
The team displayed a powerful show of teamwork and determination and once again showing that the weather was not going to get the better of them. Their plays proved that the Yuba girls could win in any weather that Mother Nature had in store. With two on base, #23, Crystal Cabrera, hit a fastball out into center field, making a fast dash to first. #7, Kim Misulich, was up next, waiting for the pitch. Cabrera steals third, Misulich hits and gets first. #12, Stephanie Cardenas, steps up to the plate. She hits a fowl ball, then a high flyer, which is caught and she is out. All the while, Cabrera tears it home for the first run. Mendocino played hard, but Yuba played harder. There were quite a few players walked on the Yuba side, many fly balls caught before they hit the ground and several foul balls. Things really got hairy in the bottom of the fifth, as we saw three batters struck out in a row. However, Yuba made a swift recovery, catching Mendocino’s fly ball for an out and making to strike outs, resulting in the win of the game.
While many of the games have been canceled and rescheduled due to relentless rain, the girls still keep conditioned by practicing and keeping good spirits. It goes to show that a little wet weather can’t keep these girls down. With championships coming up, the hopes for cleared weather are certainly higher. Yuba is set to play Laney on 4/18 in Oakland, Napa Valley on 4/20 here and Shasta Tournament on 4/22-23 in Redding. Best of luck to our ladies in blue and gold!
