Yuba Volleyball Improves Too Late in the Game

Yuba won their third game of the season on Friday, November 5, against Los Medanos College. Yuba won the match in three games (30-9, 30-18, 30-12), giving Yuba their second win of the week.

On Wednesday, November 3, Yuba faced Solano College for the second time and won. Yuba took the match in three games sweeping Solano 30-23, 30-27, 30-25. “We are moving better, hitting better and our whole game is just better,” said Head Coach Thea Post.

Yuba College’s Ashley DeMello had a team high eleven kills and eight digs. Setter Rachel Norton dished out twenty-five kills. Deanna Straolzini had seven kills and Captain Krystal Gualco had seven digs and was 100 percent from the service line.

Unfortunately, Yuba’s sudden improvement has come too late in the game. Yuba has only two games remaining in Bay Valley Conference competition. Their record stands at 3-18 overall and 3-10 in Bay Valley Conference.

Yuba faced Santa Rosa for the second time on Friday, October 29. Santa Rosa took the match in four games (30-20, 25-30, 30-18, 30-12). Gualco and DeMello each had eight kills and Straolzini had eight digs.

On Wednesday, October 27, Yuba hosted the American River Beavers. The 49ers managed to win one game, but weren’t strong enough to take the match. The Beavers won the match in four games (24-30, 30-14, 30-20, 30-26). Yuba College’s Kristen Jensen led the team defensively with eleven digs while Captain Lyndsay Nelson added eight. DeMello had with eighteen kills and Norton finished the match with thirty assists and seven digs.

Yuba faced a strong Sacramento City College on Wednesday, October 20. DeMello had eight kills and three blocks while Deanna Straolzini added six kills. Captain Krystal Gualco finished with four kills and five digs, and Norton had nineteen assists. However, in the end the 49ers’ effort wasn’t enough to defeat Sacramento City, which is one of the three teams that control the Bay Valley Conference. Sacramento City won the match in three games (30-18, 30-19, 30-19).

On Friday, October 15, Yuba traveled to Stockton to play San Joaquin Delta College. San Joaquin Delta who is ranked No. 1 in Northern California and No. 2 in the state, took the match in three games (30-16, 30-12, 30-12).

On Wednesday, October 13, Yuba managed to claim their first victory of the season against Los Medanos. Led by DeMello, Yuba offensively overpowered their opponent and beat Los Medanos in three games (30-10, 30-13, 30-20), finally adding a win to their record.

DeMello had seventeen kills and served 100 percent from the service line with three aces. Gualco stepped up and added nine kills and three digs. Norton finished the match with thirty assists, five kills and three aces. Nelson had six digs and Lorelle Font was 15-of-16 from the service line.

On Friday, October 8, Yuba faced Solano College in Suisun City. Solano took the match in four games (19-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-26). DeMello had sixteen kills and three digs while Straolzini had fourteen kills and four digs. Gualco added twelve digs and Norton finished with thirty five assists.

The Santa Rosa Bears Cubs came to Yuba College on Wednesday, October 6, to challenge the 49ers. Santa Rosa Junior College is ranked No. 3 in Northern California and No. 8 in the state. They left with the win taking the match in three games (30-25, 30-22, 30-13).

Yuba’s first conference match was on Friday, October 1, against American River College. Nelson had a great game. She was 23-of-23 from the service line and added seven kills and nine digs. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to take the match.

On Wednesday, September 29, Yuba traveled to Redding to take on Shasta College. Yuba competed well, but Shasta still took the match in three games (30-18, 30-28, 30-18).
