The Yuba College women’s volleyball team is shifting into high gear as the Bay Valley Conference continues.
During an October 7 away game, the 49ers weathered out “The Storm” of Napa College and came away with a three set win (30-18, 30-28, 30-15). Then on October 12, the 49ers went on to shoot down the Alameda Lady Cougars, with another upsetting three set win (30-14, 30-14, 30-19).
However, the team hit a snag as they battled the Solano Falcons on October 14, loosing all five sets (30-21, 30-20, 28-30, 21-30, 15-7) in the clash for first place in the Bay Valley Conference.
But the losses endured at Solano did not hinder the team in their quest for revenge when they played the Mendocino Eagles on October 19. As payback for their losses against Mendocino during the September 3 game at the Yuba Invitational Tournament, the 49ers won all three sets (30-25, 30-20, 30-22), putting the Eagles back in their cage.
“We all played really good and came together,” said Yuba College sophomore, Rachael Norton (5’6″). “We are still fighting though for first place in the conference, but I think we are playing easier teams this season”
Emily Trudgeon attributes the team’s recent successes to the lessons they learned during the pre-conference games. “During the pre-conference, we played really good teams,” said Trudgeon, “and it showed what we really needed to work on.”
Ending the first half of the BVC with a near perfect score of 6-1 games, the Yuba College Women’s Volleyball team went on to win all three sets (30-7, 30-11, 30-13) at Contra Costa on October 21.
Then on October 26 the women clipped the wings of the Laney College Eagles with another three-set win (30-9, 30-11, 30-10). But the Yuba College fans almost kept that from happening.
During the game, officials made it perfectly clear to fans from Yuba College that they would not tolerate any offensive language at the games. Yuba College fans were reminded once again after the second set not to use any profanity when yelling at the players, coaches or officials during game play. Otherwise, Yuba would have to forfeit the match. While remaining very vocal, the fans did tame their language in order to see the Yuba women take home a win.
On October 28 the 49ers and the Los Medanos Mustangs went head to head in a very tight match up. The 49ers took the game 3-0 (30-13, 30-21, 30-20), but the Mustangs more than once scared fans with a five-point lead at some points during the game.
Coach Thea Post, however, never lost confidence. “My team is great!” she exclaimed during a practice afterwards.
During half time at the October 28 game, youngsters in the crowd were given the opportunity to win some Yuba College Volleyball T-shirts by trying to hit the shirts with volleyballs. The team also showed some Halloween sprit and passed out candy to the fans during half time.
Post looks forward to the remainder of the season. “We are preparing well for each opponent that we play,” said Post. “We have a game strategy, and we know who we are playing now because we have played every team once before.”
The 49er women will play Solano at home on November 9, looking to redeem their earlier loss against the Falcons in October.
