Tuesday, September 21, was a great victory for the 49er women. Playing against rival, Consumnes College, the women won 7-1. The Consumnes women scored the first goal of the game and that was their last. The goal was made from a penalty kick, so it was not due to the lack of 49er defense.
Kim Vargas tied the game 1-1 after scoring on a rebound. Amanda Short, with an assist from Ashley Goheen, gave Yuba a 2-1 by the end of the first half. Yuba scored six unanswered goals within the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Emily Viera scored another goal for Yuba. She head-butted the ball in the net after Short kicked the ball in Viera’s direction.
The 49er’s then got back to back goals from Vargas. The first goal she got, she shoot it from ten yards out and then Goheen passed the ball to Vargas, who kicked it in, leading the Yuba women to a 5-1 lead. Goal six was netted by freshmen player, Aurora Becerra, who had an assist by Megan Viera. Viera then went on to score the last goal of the game.Coach Jason Spain commented, “The game started out a little late, but we caught up and got a great victory. Both Vargas and Goheen had big games.”
He went on to state that, “During the second half of the game, we were 6-0.”
According to Spain, Whitney Alexander and Leah Taylor had a great defensive game.
With the team’s record of five wins, two losses, and one tied game, the season looks pretty promising for the Yuba women.
